This is an authentic Awa Shijira-ori fabric bolt, produced during the Showa period (1926–1989) and dyed with true natural indigo (Sho-ai) using traditional methods recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Japan.
Awa Shijira-ori originates from Tokushima Prefecture and is renowned for its unique textured weave, which provides excellent breathability and comfort, especially in Japan’s hot and humid summers. The characteristic uneven surface reduces contact with the skin, making it ideal for summer kimono and traditional garments.
The deep, calm indigo tone is the result of genuine natural indigo dyeing, offering a depth and softness that synthetic dyes cannot reproduce. As a Showa-era textile, this piece reflects the craftsmanship and aesthetic sensibilities of its time, when traditional techniques were still widely practiced by skilled artisans.
Suitable for kimono tailoring, textile study, collectors, or anyone who appreciates authentic Japanese heritage fabrics.
It is in very good condition with no stains or damage.
