What is Arimatsu-Narumi Shibori?
Arimatsu-Narumi Shibori is a traditional Japanese tie-dye technique that originated in the early 17th century in the towns of Arimatsu and Narumi, now part of Nagoya City in Aichi Prefecture. It involves hand-dyeing fabric by binding, folding, stitching, or compressing it to create intricate and unique patterns.
Each piece is handmade, resulting in one-of-a-kind textures and designs.
This Arimatsu Narumi Shibori fabric bolt is a deadstock item and remains in new condition. It has not yet been stretched (Yunoshi), so the current width is about 15 cm. After Yunoshi processing, it will become approximately 35 cm wide and about 1200 cm long. This length is enough to make one adult yukata.
Yunoshi is a traditional finishing process used for kimono fabrics. The fabric is first moistened with steam and then carefully stretched to its full width while removing wrinkles and distortions. This process restores the fabric to its proper width and smooth condition, making it ready for tailoring.
