What is a Bira Kanzashi?
A Bira Kanzashi is a traditional Japanese hair ornament distinguished by its delicate, dangling metal charms that sway and softly chime with movement. The word “bira” refers to these small, fluttering metal plates or pendants attached to the main hairpin.
Bira kanzashi became especially popular during the Edo period and continued to be worn through the Meiji and Taisho eras, particularly by maiko (apprentice geisha) and women wearing formal kimono.
They are typically made from materials such as silver, brass, copper, or gold, and are often decorated with seasonal motifs, flowers, or auspicious symbols. The gentle movement and subtle sound of the bira add elegance and liveliness to the hairstyle.
Today, antique bira kanzashi are highly valued as collectible Japanese hair ornaments, admired for their craftsmanship, historical significance, and refined beauty. They are also displayed as decorative art pieces, even when no longer used for daily wear.
