This silk bolt is a traditional Japanese fabric intended for making Buddhist vestments and ceremonial robes.
This piece was produced during the Taisho era to the early Showa era, approximately 100 years ago, making it a rare and historically significant textile.
The fabric is made of Sha silk, a lightweight open-weave silk traditionally used for formal summer garments. Sha is characterized by its elegant transparency and airy structure, which allows light and air to pass through the fabric. Despite its delicate appearance, it has a crisp texture and refined drape, creating a dignified and graceful impression.
The woven design features a checkerboard pattern (ichimatsu) combined with circular motifs and the characters "Nihon-kyo" (日本教). Rich, high-quality gold thread has been incorporated throughout the design, resulting in a remarkably luxurious and impressive textile.
I could not find any stains, damage, or other significant flaws, and the overall condition is exceptionally good for its age.
