This authentic boro textile dates from the Meiji to Taisho period (approximately 1868–1926).
It is made from soft indigo-dyed cotton and has been carefully patched together with pieces of vintage cotton fabric, including fabric from shop banners (nobori) and traditional happi coats. The result is a fascinating textile that beautifully reflects the Japanese tradition of repairing and reusing fabrics.
The holes, fading, discoloration, and areas of wear are not flaws but are part of the authentic character and beauty of boro. These signs of age tell the story of a textile that was treasured and used over many years, giving it a unique wabi-sabi charm that cannot be reproduced.
This is a wonderful example of traditional Japanese folk textiles and would make an exceptional piece for collectors, display, or textile art projects.
