This 24K gold leaf hirahaku (flat) thread is covered with pure gold leaf on both sides. Urushi lacquer is applied to both sides of washi paper (the lacquer acts as an adhesive), and skilled artisans carefully apply pure gold leaf to each sheet before it is finely cut into thread.
This thread was made about 40–50 years ago. Today, there are no artisans who can produce it using this level of advanced technique, making it an extremely rare and valuable piece.
